Anvil Bar Opening Night

It was incredibly challenging to shoot in this type of lighting. Some areas were overlit while others were way too dark. The contrast made setting white balances and flash modes very difficult. I also realized that having an off camera flash is almost absolutely necessary for these types of events. I had a very difficult time capturing the nature colors while shooting bright enough to freeze the action of the bartenders and the crowd. I used a lot of photoshop to adjust brightness/contrast, shadows/highlights, and mostly hue/saturation. By decreasing the saturation, I was able to bring the colors back to normal. The best lens for shooting the bartenders was definitely the 50mm F1.4, it was fast enough to freeze their movements and the shallow depth of field gave a nice blur for the background. Many shots were composed using the sigma 10-22mm wide angle which required a lot of adjustments because the lens is very dark in this setting, tripod mount is absolutely required for this lens. Taking pictures of guests was almost impossible without external flash but became overly washed out with flash on. A remote flash plus diffuser would have been perfect. Please click the following link for the gallery, I managed to snap a few good ones and hopefully the owners will be able to use some of these shots.
